MATES in Mining
Sinead Donovan is the Marketing and Partnerships Manager at MATES WA, managing the MATES in Mining and MATES in Construction WA brand in Western Australia. MATES in Mining is an evidence-based suicide awareness and prevention program for the mining industry. Research has been conducted in the mining industry in Australia, revealing that between 11 and 25 (per 100,000 mining workers) die by suicide each year. MATES in Mining works from the fundamental principle that increasing the capacity of individuals and communities to recognise suicidal behaviour, and prevent and respond to suicide, is essential to reducing the rate of suicide. MATES deliver training recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO), and support mining workers and family members through their 24/7 free helpline – 1300 642 111.
